GST Now Counts in GPA: UNILAG Clarifies GST Credits
GST courses will now contribute to students' Grade Point Average(GPA).

General Studies (GST) is a foundational course designed to equip students with essential knowledge in communication skills, Nigerian heritage, entrepreneurship, and other core subjects. Traditionally, GST courses did not affect students' Grade Point (GP), serving only as a required academic component. However, this changed with the introduction of the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).
WHAT IS CCMAS?
CCMAS, introduced by the National Universities Commission (NUC), aims to standardize academic programs across Nigerian universities, ensuring a well-rounded education for students. One of its key changes is the inclusion of GST courses in students’ GP calculations—but only for 100-level students.
In a circular issued from Professor Olufemi Shaibu, Director of Service Compact (SERVICOM) to the Deans of Faculties, it was stated:
“Following the implementation of CCMAS, GST courses will now contribute to students' Grade Point Average (GPA). However, this applies strictly to 100-level students. Students in higher levels will continue to register for GST courses, but their grades will not be factored into their GP.”
This clarification has brought relief to many students who initially feared a retroactive application of the grading system. It also serves as a reminder for 100-level students to take their GST courses more seriously, as their performance will now impact their academic standing.
FINAL NOTE
As the university community adapts to these changes, students are encouraged to stay informed and verify academic updates from official sources. Change is constant, but with the right information, students can navigate these adjustments smoothly.
